Social Media Applications: What They Are, What to Avoid

These days, social media applications have become part of using your accounts. You might have an app to play a game, or to bring you updates.

But what exactly are social media applications? And can you trust all of them equally?

What Social Media Applications Are

The applications, or apps, can be very helpful. If you set up certain apps, they will tell you if any one new joins with your interests, or perhaps when a new game you like will start.

But some apps just cause problems. For example, if you use Facebook, Twitter, or MySpace, you may have heard of automatic friend or follower apps.

While these apps are popular, they may also get you kicked off the site. Why? Because you are using the apps to do things you can’t do as a regular person – like add 2000 friends or followers a day, every day for ever.

That’s why the sites delete these apps when they find them. And the users if you have been abusive to other members or the system in general.

If you are lucky, you’ll just get a warning

Appearance Apps

Some apps work only on the appearance of your site. Maybe you like a specific design not offered by the social site you are on, so you use an app to get the look you like. Usually not a big deal.

The sites don’t like the ones that work their servers like crazy, and that give you unfair advantage over other members.

For example, you can get an app to tweet for you. Maybe that makes it easy to tweet, but if it is tweeting for you, then the tweets are prewritten, and might be considered spam.

Are you starting to get the picture?

Adding Friends

Let’s take another look at the apps that allow you to add friends quickly.

Some of these apps may not get you booted if you keep your limits low for adding friends or followers. If you only add the number of friends that you do as a person, maybe 10 or 15 or 25, you might not get booted.

Check on the site where you want to use it before you ruin your profile. Do a few searches on major engines, and see what others have found. Check out some groups and forums to see what other users have found when they used the app.

Understand also that even if others have used the same app you want to use, it doesn’t mean that it’s safe. Any day of the week, the site owner can change their policy and your social media applications will get your account deleted.

It happens all the time. Now you have to start over. For some, that’s no big deal. For others, it’s devastating. Think before you get yourself stuck.

Of course there are more kinds of apps than just 2 or three. The ones that get your account deleted usually have to do with automating some action on the site.

What If I’m Already Booted

Maybe it’s not too late. See if your account can be reactivated if you cease using the apps.

You may need a new profile if you can set one up.

Also, you can hop onto a new site and start building a presence there. That site may have different rules, or you may have decided it isn’t worth the risk. And you are off and running again.

Either way, check around before you use new social media applications to see what the results might be.
