MLM Lead Generating: The Leper Approach to 5 free MLM leads a week

MLM lead generating ideas and methods can come from anywhere. As proof, I’ve got a doozie today. I won’t tell you where I came across this idea, as I think it would be unfair.

Believe it or not, some people won’t see the problem with this method. It just makes me laugh. You’ll understand the name in a second.

The Standard Method

First, a quick review of the standard method for MLM lead generating:

Step 1: Sit down with a piece of paper and a pencil.

Step 2: Ask yourself, or your new distributor, who do you know who is named Tom?

Step 3: Write down anyone named Tom that you know.

Step 4: Repeat Steps 2 and 3 with the names, Dick, then Harry, then any other name you can think of. If necessary, thumb through the yellow pages and use job titles as a memory jogger.

Keep doing this until you are making $25-100K per month.

Some sponsors simply make up a long list of memory joggers. I’ve even seen it in company materials. You have to make a list, they say.

I won’t argue that every distributor needs a market, and yes, warm markets may make the business easier. The list helps people with MLM lead generating while they don’t know the business. Eventually, I think you need to move beyond it, though, to build a real network marketing business.

For those of you who did this but still have a job and not a big organization, you obviously haven’t learned the additional “Leper Approach” to building your list.

The Leper Approach

*** Note: Sarcasm Ahead ***

By the way, I gave this approach that name, for two reasons.First, that’s what the creator makes you if you do it. Second, that’s what he expects you to do to people around you.

Here it is.

This should kick you MLM lead generating to a new level. (Or a new low!)

Let’s say you’ve exhausted your Tom, Dick and Harry list. You had a great list, you’ve gone through it, and you still don’t have much of an organization. You need more leads.

Think. Who mows your lawn? What about your UPS delivery guy?

Who does your nails? What about your taxes? Do you know your paperboy?

You should talk to all of these people. Give them a presentation, a DVD, a CD, a packet – whatever your system says, do it. Talk about easy MLM lead generating.

Now here comes the Leper part of the approach.

Get back with these people – your landscaper, the UPS guy, your nail technician, tax accountant, and paperboy or girl. Sign them up.

And if they don’t sign up, switch. That’s right. You can’t waste time with service people who don’t sign up! Switch to Fed-Ex, and then to DHL. And then, just keep switching.

Think of the possibilities.

What about your kids’ piano teacher? Or your grocery store. Or the cashier at your video store. You can switch all these people at random, and start a new MLM lead generating system that will produce 5 leads a week!

*** Remember, real method, sarcasm added ***

Need a New Nail Tech?

Seriously, I think you see the problems with this approach. First, how many women want to switch nail techs every week until one signs up? How many lawn mowing companies do you have in your community?

I see the “Leper Approach” as a nightmare to your personal life in two ways.

First, if no one can get close to you unless they go through your MLM lead generating machine, you will have very few friends or close relationships.

Second, you will be on the phone constantly looking for new people to fill vital services for your family. I’m all for real, determined work, but this method doesn’t approach people straight on.

You take someone who does a good job at what they do, and when they don’t want to change, you drop them like a hot potato.

A Better Way

Instead, why not talk to people who want to hear about your opportunity? MLM lead generating doesn’t have to be a sneak up and surprise attack. If you look for people who want a new business, who want to work at home, you save yourself having to find a new piano teacher for your kids or a new nail tech every month, and the leads you talk to want to hear what you have to say.

Revolutionary, I know.

Take a look at these pages. You can read about MLM lead sources – a list of over two dozen marketing ideas.

Also, my page on starting a lead program.

Seriously, I'm looking for people who want to know more, not every Tom, Dick, and Harry that comes along.
