What Mike Dillard Forgot in Magnetic Sponsoring: 5 Topics

Mike Dillard shook up the network marketing business when he released Magnetic Sponsoring a while back. The book covers some ground, and Mike knows what he’s talking about. It opened my eyes in many ways to what makes a person successful in MLM.

While I thoroughly enjoyed reading Magnetic Sponsoring and learning what Mike Dillard has to say, I have to point out that he left several items out.

Here is my list of what should be in a manual to how to run a network marketing distributorship, but that Magnetic Sponsoring skips over.

If you want my take on another of his products, I have two reviews right here. MLM Traffic Formula 2 I wrote as an FAQ, and Mike emphasizes relationships in the second release, so I wrote about the importance of relationships in MLM Traffic Formula II

network marketing business, funded proposal example

1. Money is a huge issue

To run your distributorship, you will need some cash. Dillard alludes to this in his discussion of buying MLM leads and going broke, and in his explanation of the training he has taken. He doesn’t ever give an accounting of how much you will need to survive to success once you sign up in MLM.

2. Sign-ups: How many is enough?

Have you ever sat down and calculated out how many people you will need in your downline to in order to be successful? It will open your eyes. I think Magnetic Sponsoring didn’t cover this because Dillard meant for it to address any company, not just one – still, you should figure out how many people you need to recruit to be successful.

3. Which Program?

Dillard says you can be a success in any company – probably true, but some companies do pay better than others, and some have a better set of products. Jeffrey Lant, author of Multi-Level Money, included a short list of basic questions you can use to evaluate your newest business opportunity and see if it will work well.

I’m sure this doesn’t appear in the book because, as above, he wanted to be generic and help people find leads for their MLM. Having been in several, I have found vast differences between companies, and I have taken Mr. Lant’s list and added to it for my own use. Makes it easier to pick a new company or decide if I am going to put any effort in, or just get products at cost.

4. Magnetic Sponsoring is a beginning

This one Dillard alludes to on pages 47-49, I think, where he explains that you need about 5 years of education and experience to duplicate his course. It’s an impressive list, and I don’t doubt you need the skills, equipment and contracts he mentions.

Problem is he leaves out that by using his system, you will eventually kill its effectiveness. He even gives an example in his book of the same problem: the Dead Doctors Don’t Lie tapes. At one point, this cassette tape was the zenith of direct marketing for MLM opportunities and mailing to lead lists. And now? When was the last time you saw it?

You may not even know what it is…which proves my point.

Within a reasonable period of time, say a few years or so, Mike Dillard and Magnetic Sponsoring will be old hat…everyone will claim to have read his book, or that it doesn’t apply to them.

Sad, since he wrote a landmark book. But by all of us using it, we will exhaust its power. People like new, fresh. So, what do you do when Magnetic Sponsoring no longer converts? Hopefully you will have learned how to do it yourself, or Dillard will have a new one out you can use.

By the way, if you find yourself already in this position, consider Ann Sieg’s book The Renegade Network Marketer. She covers some similar ground, but not all the same, so you get the new and fresh idea for your visitors and mlm leads.

5. How to do it…for real

Mike Dillard’s main point in Magnetic Sponsoring is that you can build an MLM lead machine, and get leads for free. The problem with this statement? He only gives short explanations of how the machine works. In his new trainings, Building on Budget, and Black Belt Recruiting, I believe he sheds some light on the process.

In brief, he suggests you should build a website, free or paid, and channel traffic to your Magnetic Sponsoring affiliate link and his other products. People will then sign up for the free e-class – a series of 10 videos or emails, with regular installments after that. Some of these people will buy the books; you can expect a reasonable profit, which you then use to pay for the traffic or advertising.

Trouble is you, like me, may not succeed. Don’t get me wrong – I didn’t spend thousands, and I didn’t try every trick in the book. Ferny Cevallos finally hit upon a good set of keywords derived from the personal name of a famous online network marketing business owner, and he succeeded. I decided paid traffic wasn’t for me. I took a break, and started looking at other ideas.

I expect Dillard’s book Building on a Budget covers some of the same ideas I have found. Now, some time later, I can generate traffic without spending money. It’s a good feeling ;-)

Final Thoughts

I’ve been somewhat hard on Mike Dillard’s book. I’d like to mention a few things he wrote that really hit the nail on the head. I start my page numbers from the first page of chapter 1, by the way.

I think any newbie in network marketing will find his definition of your real product eye opening. He also offers a plan on the best way to build in mlm, and he has a good plan.

One hint: he expects you to become a leader, and he breaks down how past leaders have really become big names in the industry and built their organizations. He explains how to earn and grow in basic terms, and gives you a ground level marketing education.

Now that you know what he left out, you should read what he includes. Mike Dillard has produced a great book, and a good system for growing a business, even if he hasn’t given you everything. Just keep coming back here to get the rest. ;o)
