Backlinks Mania: 7 Ways to Get More Links

Got any backlinks? Do you know how many or what kind they are?

Site owners talk about links like they were the finest sausage in the world – but these are links of a different type.

What are they?

Backlinks refer to when a link to your site shows up on another site. That’s simple enough, right? So any link to your site from someone else’s site is a backlink…

Seems confusing, because people add in all kinds of qualifiers. Inbound links, which are the same thing. Track backs – a special kind of direct blog link, but still a link. No follow links – to keep from giving your page rank to another site.

They all do basically the same thing: send people to your site, and tell the search engines that you have a site worth visiting.

Since the search engines value your site based on how many links point to your site, how do you get more?

Let’s run through a few ways, with some editorial thrown in for good measure.

1. Social Media Sites

You can post your link on your social media profiles and pages like:FacebookMySpaceTwitterMyYahoo!/Yahoo 360iGoogle…and about 200 more if you want to look around.

A backlink is like a vote, and you can vote for your own site on your own pages, but make sure you also link to plenty of other valuable sites.

2. Social Bookmarking Sites

I can make a similar list to the above with bookmarking sites, such as:StumbleuponDiggDeliciousMagnoliaBackflipKaboodleAnd another 200 of these as well.

Some of these can really drive traffic if you use them well.

3. Your Other Properties

For instance, you might have a blog for personal trips or to show your photos to your friends and family. You can drop a backlink on that site to your cool new website or blog as well.

Some of the free sites don’t like you to set up blogs just for links, though. In other words, if you set up a site on one of those, you should still aim to give value to your visitors

4. Forums

You can hop on most any search engine and type in your favorite subject with the word forum after it, and you’ll find several forums to visit.

At the forum, you can post a comment or ask a question. In your signature, you can have a link to your site.

When you say something valuable, people will read your post, and will then want to see your site. That link lets them know where to find you.

5. Blog Comments

Similar to the last item, if you post a comment on a blog, you have a chance to leave your website address with the comment.

I’m not talking about in your actual comment. I mean that the comment form usually will allow you to place your site address as part of the form.

You do this enough, and the backlinks add up, and people find you faster than before.

6.Link Swaps with Webmasters

I have found several places on the net that you can exchange links with other webmasters.

Many people feel that these no longer matter, since they are reciprocal – you link to each other. I disagree. But just to be sure, when you find someone willing to exchange links, point your links at different pages within each other’s sites, don’t have them pointing at each other, and use good keywords in your anchor text.

7. Ask

Perhaps the most potent links come from your visitors. So put a little blurb at the end of a page that asks people to save your site for future use.

You can put a little icon that allows them to save to a specific service like those mentioned above, or not. Eventually, if you have good content, these backlinks will pile up, and search engines will notice.
